Q&A

Why do some nail techs get mad when you give them safety information?

1. Professional Pride: Nail technicians often take pride in their skills and knowledge. If you provide safety information that they were not previously aware of or did not consider, they may interpret it as a criticism of their expertise. This can lead to defensiveness or anger as they may feel their professional competence is being questioned.

2. Resistance to Change: Like anyone, nail technicians may be resistant to change. If the safety information you provide suggests new practices or techniques, it may require them to modify their current methods. This can be seen as an inconvenience or a disruption to their established routine, leading to frustration or resistance.

3. Lack of Awareness: Not all nail technicians may be aware of the latest safety guidelines or research in their field. When presented with new information, they may feel embarrassed or defensive about not knowing it beforehand. This can trigger a defensive response or anger as they may perceive it as an attack on their knowledge or professionalism.

4. Time and Cost Considerations: Implementing safety measures or purchasing new equipment may involve additional time and financial investments for nail technicians. If they perceive the safety information as burdensome or costly, it can contribute to their resistance and frustration.

5. Communication Approach: The way you present the safety information can also impact their reaction. If it is delivered in a condescending or judgmental manner, it may trigger a defensive response. It is important to approach the conversation with empathy, respect, and a willingness to engage in a constructive dialogue.

6.  Online comments:  If a nail technician becomes upset when safety issues are mentioned online, it could be due to a few reasons. Firstly, it may come across as damaging to their reputation and business, as perception of safety concerns could deter potential clients. Additionally, it might suggest that their skills or practices are being questioned, which could be hurtful to their professional pride.

Not all nail technicians will react negatively to safety information. Many professionals value ongoing education and prioritize the well-being of their clients. However, if you encounter resistance, it may be helpful to find common ground, provide evidence-based information, and emphasize the benefits of implementing safety measures for both the technician and the client or go to another salon.
